Dr Stuart Baker
Intensivist and Prehospital and Retrieval Medicine Specialist
Dr Stuart Baker is an experienced Intensivist and Prehospital and Retrieval Medicine Specialist.
Dr Baker has over 20 years of experience in Intensive Care Medicine, including work as director of ICU at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth, and as director of ICU at Mackay Base Hospital. He is currently appointed as a senior staff specialist in Intensive Care at Redcliffe Hospital.
Dr Baker is also experienced in Prehospital and Retrieval Medicine, with work in both rotary and fixed wing aeromedical retrievals. He currently works part time coordinating aeromedical retrievals for the State of Queensland.
Through his career, Dr Baker has maintained interests in research, education and organ donation – holding posts as Director of Research at the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital ICU, and having continuous involvement in numerous clinical trials through his career. He currently has an interest in recovery from critical illness, and is the medical lead for the first and largest ICU follow-up clinic in Australia and New Zealand. This service seeks to understand difficulties experienced in recovery from critical illness, and provides support and guidance to ICU survivors.
Early in his career, Dr Baker trained in surgery – becoming a neurosurgical trainee before deciding to pursue a career in Intensive Care Medicine. He also spent considerable time working in Emergency and Anaesthesia departments through his career.
Dr Baker has broad experience and is held in high regard in the ICU community. He is very experienced in patient sedation, has the skills and experience to deal with almost any adverse medical situation, and always prioritises patient safety and welfare.
